The homework is to write a rough draft of a descriptive paragraph based on a commonly recognized character stereotype. Stereotyped characters are recognizable figures in fiction: the cowboy, the private investigator, the dumb blonde, the jock, the absent minded professor, the school librarian, the Goth, a hippie, the little old lady and so on. You may make your paragraph situational in its description of such a character.
For example, the skater boy
He arrived to English 9, 5 minutes late with his long board tucked under his arm. His ball cap was on backwards, only half covering his straggly long and wind swept hair. He bumped into another students desk, shouting, what's up dude." etc.

Write a descriptive paragraph based on an image of your choice. Use adjective, adverbs, and a variety of sentence structure to make your image come alive. Underline and colour code each of the sentence types you use. Your paragraph should have 2-3 simple sentences, perhaps used for effect, Two -three compound sentences joining related ideas of equal importance, and 2-3 complex sentences, further developing an idea. Colour code and underline the different sentence types. You will peer edit each others work next class.
Vancouver residents awoke to the splendor of the first snowfall (simple sentence). The previous evening had not been splendid, but fortunately no major accidents had taken place on the snowy roads(compound sentence). After working all night the employees manning the snow plows and salt trucks ensured that residents had a safe morning commute (complex sentence). Students and staff arrived at Carson Graham and they were immediately awestruck by the shimmering snow clad Grouse Mountain looming above. (compound complex) Many found it hard to focus and concentrate, as thoughts of winter break, snow fort making, and gift opening swirled in their heads (complex sentence).

Begin preparing quotes, comments and illustrations for your verbal visual essay based on "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty."
In order to find the theme(s) of the story, ask yourself what message do you get from the story. See hand out provided in class for some suggestions. Also,, if given the opportunity what advice would you have given Walter Mitty when he was a young man? What do you think Walter's life will be like in twenty years. Remember your poster must discuss 2-3 themes, with a quote and justification/explanation of the quote.
It also should provide 2-3 examples of how character is revealed in the story.
It also should identify the major internal and external conflicts of the story.
Visual representations of the various day dream settings may aid in your discussion, as well as illustrations of Walter Mitty and his alter ego.

Good copy of multi descriptive paragraph is due Jan. 9/10. Paragraphs should use vivid detail, figurative language and sentence variety to create a picture in the mind of the reader. Be sure to include a clear thesis statement, and to use transitional phrases in order to link paragraphs together. Also don't forget your conclusion.
