Choice one: Write a paragraph interpreting what Ponyboy meant when he recited "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. Discuss the literal meaning of the poem, and identify the poetic device used. Also discuss, the metaphorical significance of the poem, in that the boys have lost their innocence. Choice: Design and create two separate postcards based on two characters in the novel thus far. Foe example, Ponyboy writing to Sodapop, and Sodapop's reply.

Use rich, vivid descriptive language, create imagery appealing to the five senses, and utilize figurative language to enhance your writing. Use proper paragraph structure: topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence. See descriptive word package in your binder to help with your choice of vivid language.

Create a rough draft of your newspaper article, imagining that you were alive during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, in the short story "The Dog of Pompeii by Louis Untermyer. Refer to the "Newspaper Article Format" hand out provided in class. Blank templates can be picked up from room D201 on Monday Sept. 24th; they are on the computer desk. Your article will be assessed using Criterion C Producing text, and Criterion D Using Language. Be certain to read over the list of descriptive words package in order to make your writing vivid by appealing to all five senses.
Class time will be allowed on Tuesday to finish your article, but bring in any drawings, or photos that you will need for your finished article.

Poetry continued
Today you should have completed a 20-30 line poem based on the present or recent past, focusing on your transformation in your grade eight year at Carson. How have you changed physically, emotionally ( maturity, awareness of self and others), intellectually ( setting and acheivement of goals), and so on ? Write a 20-30 line poem based on this transformation. Your poem may be free verse and should include four of the following sound devices: alliteration, assonance, consonance, onomatopoeia, and effective repetition. NOTE: the use of other poetic device of your choice is also encouraged!
Homework
Write a poem set in the future. How do you see your life unfolding as you go through your high school years, and onward into your future? Your poem should be 20-30 lines in length, and use four of the following device: rhythm, rhyme, allusion, symbolism, tone, and hyberbole.
Consider the following questions:

What extra curricular activities would you like to involved in?
