Example of organization
Introductory paragraph
Compelling lead statement:
In The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls, are Rex and Rosemary free spirits or irresponsible parents incapable of providing for their family?
Three Main Points
1. The Walls parents support each other in their parenting techniques.
2. They share similar attitudes towards the environment and thereby raise their children with a lack of materialism and subsequently few possessions.
3. A major source of conflict in their relationship is their expectation of the role each perceives the other should fulfill.
Jan. 17/18
Write a rough draft of a vivid memorable incident from your childhood or adolescence. Topics you might consider are: a frightening experience, a fight with a friend or family member, a memorable accomplishment, a time you were misjudged, a time you were bullied, a time you influenced or impacted someone else ( or vice versus) , a new arrival, a departure, and so on. Your memoir should follow a pattern similar to a plot outline. Be sure to use a first person voice, that is distinguishable as your own. Share your story honestly, and see if can impart a rich description of human struggle, triumph, or a lesson learned. Try to create word pictures that will allow the reader to relate or to trigger a memory of their own. A memoir may pose questions, challenge societal norms, advance ideas, and bring about an epiphany our common shared human experience.

Review the "Pit and Pendulum" for ideas for your upcoming assignment.
"The Pit and the Pendulum" Assignment due Monday Nov. 7/16
Please note some choices are of an individual nature.
See below for choices:
1. Create a diorama of the dungeon the protagonist finds himself in, along with a depiction of the torture devices.
2. Write a persuasive essay about whether or not Roger Corman's 1961 film is better at creating suspense and terror than E.A.Poe's original story, or vice versus.
3. Recreate a scene from the story using artistic medium of your choice. Provide 1-2 paragraphs explaining the significance of the scene you depicted and why you chose to use black pen, charcoal, pastel, etc.
4. Write and perform a rap about the protagonist's experience. Your rap must reference the plot, and express the emotion, inner thought, and feelings of the tortured man. It must also have rhyme, beat, and poetic device. You may film your performance and submit it on a storage device, or via email.
5. As talk show host (s) interview the unfortunate narrator/protagonist of "The Pit and the Pendulum" within hours of his rescue from the torture chamber of Toledo, and the Spanish Inquisition. Create 20-30 questions, and answers that will allow the viewer to understand, how the protagonist found himself in such a dire situation., thereby at the mercy of "The Spanish Inquisition" and the roller coaster of emotions he must of felt (terror, despair and so on).
6. Take on the persona of Edgar Allan Poe, and in a letter to a friend (of Poe's) explain the symbols he used in "The Pit and the Pendulum". answer why he chose the symbols, and how they came to him as a result of the experiences in his own life.
7. Make a modern day movie pitch for "The Pit and the Pendulum". As an agent hired by Poe to promote his story to producers you must demonstrate your expertise. The package for the pitch will include a paragraph of each of the following: a summary of the story plot, a description of what the setting would look like, an explanation of why a certain musical group or composer would be chosen to write or perform the sound track, and an explanation of what actor would be chosen for the lead role and why.
8. An expository essay detailing the protagonist' s will to survive. Hope is mentioned numerous times throughout the story, along with obvious terror and despair.
9. Create a 8-10 scene story board of the plot. Each box must be illustrated with detail significant to the story, along with several lines of explanation, below.
10. Write a two page ballad that tells the rich and vivid story of the protagonist's trial, referencing the Spanish Inquisition, his subsequent sentence, incarceration, prolonged torture, and liberation by General LaSalle (again with reference to the historic importance). Your Ballad must have stanzas, meter, rhyme, and poetic device.
Oct. 18/16
Next class you will be writing your compare and contrast essay based on the " Black Cat" and "The Cask of Amontillado".
It is open book in that you may bring in your completed chart based on the reliability of the narrators, and the hand out filled with quotes pertaining to as whether or not Montresor is insane or a psychopath.
You may choose whether you limit your topic to simply comparing the two narrators of each story, or whether you compare the elements of Gothic fiction of both stories.
Your essay should avoid the use of "I" as it is expository. Instead try to use ''one" and "the reader". It should use quotes which support your ideas. Use italics around the quotes and provide the page number.
Your essay should have an introduction in which background information is provided. You might include
details about Poe and his purpose in writing the stories. As well as commonalities of the stories ( first person narrator, a murder etc)
and finally a thesis statement .
Example of a thesis statement comparing the narrators of each story: In both the Black Cat" and " The Cask of Amontillado" Poe aptly creates first person narrators which are memorable for their lack of reliability, yet seem trustworthy, but ultimately commit crimes of a psychopathic or insane nature.
The following supportive paragraphs will therefore discuss the latter mentioned specifics.
The essay will end with a concluding or summative paragraph.
Example of a thesis statement comparing the two stories. " The Black Cat" and "The Cask of Amontillado" have many elements of
Gothic fiction in common; the most noteworthy being the setting, frightening and unreliable narrators, and the acts of violence and or murders committed.
Oct. 14/16
Read over "The Black Cat" and " The Cask of Amontillado". You will be writing a compare and contrast essay based on the two stories next Thursday, Oct. 20.
